Patient Advocate
We're looking for volunteers who can use their experience of a primary or secondary breast cancer diagnosis to help improve breast cancer services and care for others through our Service Pledge programme. We are particularly keen to hear from people who are living with secondary breast cancer.
From May 2022 our Service Pledge programme is working with breast cancer services across the South Yorkshire region. We are looking to recruit volunteer Patient Advocates who would be available to volunteer with us between May 2022 and March 2023. The role can be undertaken remotely anywhere from home although we would be particularly interested to hear from people based in or near the South Yorkshire region.
Full training is provided by Breast Cancer Now, and you will always have support from a member of staff and other Patient Advocates.
As a Service Pledge Patient Advocate, you can help to support breast cancer patients to represent the local patient voice and help improve services and care within their breast cancer service.
The Service Pledge is a programme dedicated to delivering lasting positive change to everyone's experience of breast cancer. It brings patients and their healthcare professionals together to design and deliver meaningful improvements. By actively involving people with different perspectives of breast cancer, we can develop a more complete understanding of the challenges and opportunities to improve healthcare services.
We expect the role to require around 4-5 hours a month which will mostly be remote, although there may be some face to face meetings if COVID-19 allows. We are therefore looking for people who can join virtual meetings (via Microsoft Teams and/or Zoom) and would also be willing to travel to South Yorkshire if needed. Full training and support will be provided for those who are less confident with joining online meetings, and any travel costs will be reimbursed by Breast Cancer Now in line with our expenses policy.
The role will include activities such as
- Reviewing and analysing feedback
- Supporting local patient representatives to share their experiences
- Sharing your own experience of what works well
- Facilitating discussions between patients and healthcare professionals
You can read about Clover's experience of being a Patient Advocate on our website.
The application deadline is Tuesday 26 April 2022.
If you’d like to discuss the role, please get in touch with Fran Berry, Patient Experience Senior Officer at service.pledge@breastcancernow.org or on 0207 960 3592
